MSc Engineering for International Development – Dr. Priti H. Parikh

This MSc aims to expose engineers and built environment students and professionals to the challenges and complexities of working in a global context, and equip them with necessary skills and knowledge to place
these in the frameworks and paradigms in which they might work. This programme will focus on the provision
of sustainable and resilient infrastructure in low-middle income countries.

What will I learn?
To understand infrastructure delivery and design processes in resource limited settings and how to mobilise technical expertise to develop solutions in a global context. You will learn how to engage with local stakeholders effectively and how to address engineering challenges in a sustainable way.The wide range of taught modules, including engineering and international development, appropriate technologies, resilience, water and wastewater treatment, urban flooding and drainage, environmental modelling, GIS, natural and environmental disasters, will also provide the opportunity to understand and critically engage with the challenges and ethical dilemmas of working as an engineer in the global context and serving multiple potential clients.

Why should I study this degree at UCL?
Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering at UCL is an energetic and exciting department with well-established research projects and networks in the areas of environment engineering, transportation, urban resilience, waste water provision, human settlements and renewable energy in the global context.

In addition to strong academic environment, there is an existing interest in the international development work coming from the student body, which is reflected in the rapid growth and expansion of the UCL branch
of Engineers Without Borders (EWB), with whom the course will engage, providing opportunities for students to participate in the organisations’ Member-Led International Partnerships, summer schools in India and Mexico (optional), and the Know Before You Go course, based on the yearly event run by Engineers without Borders UK.The MSc provides a clear route to becoming a skilled engineer, actively involved with the challenges facing
low-middle income regions globally.

What is the structure of this degree?
The programme consists of 180 credits in total, made up of 6 taught modules worth 15 credits each, a
collaborative project worth 30 credits and a major research project worth 60 credits.
A postgraduate diploma
(120 credits) is also offered if the research project is omitted.

All optional and elective modules are subject to availability. A minimum of 2 and maximum of 3 optional
modules must be taken. An elective module may only be selected if 2 (not 3) optional modules are taken.

Practical Activities and Field Trips
The programme includes a number of practical activities and field trips, including a site visit to the Centre for Alternative Technologies in Wales and the Know Before You Go workshop organised jointly with Engineers Without Borders (3 days) and the opportunity to participate in Engineers Without Borders’ Member-Led International Partnerships and summer schools in India and Mexico.

This field trip to the CAT in Wales, taking place during Reading Week in Term 1, is designed to give practical experience of appropriate technologies, and to highlight issues relating to application of decentralised technologies at community scale. It will be assessed as a component of the Appropriate Technologies in Practice module. This will entail additional costs of approximately £300.

What are my career prospects after this degree?
MSc Engineering for International Development graduates will be able to pursue a career in the field of engineering, working on projects in low-middle income, developing countries, as well as the broader international development sector in different capacities and within various organisations currently operating in the field, such as the UN, the EU or NGOs such as WaterAid, Practical Action, Habitat for Humanity and more. Graduates will gain the necessary skills and understanding to address the challenges of poverty alleviation on a global scale, therefore an international dimension of their work is to be expected.

First career destinations could include:

  • Department for International Development (DfID) and other international development agencies
  • Engineering Consultancies: Arup, Mott MacDonald, Buro Happold, IMC
  • United Nations (UNDP, UNEP), EU, World Bank
  • NGOs and INGOs worldwide such as Practical Action, Water Aid, WSUP
  • PhD and further study in Engineering and International Development
